Rings, Crowns & Kolo: How We Say “I Do”
Why the Serbian Orthodox Church I’ve been blessed to grow up in the Serbian Orthodox Church, and ever since I was little I’ve always dreamed of getting married in a traditional ceremony filled with beautiful prayers, symbolism and centuries-old rituals. The fact that Daniel has wholeheartedly supported having our wedding this way means more to me than I can possible say. Sharing this part of my culture and faith with him - and with all of you - makes today even more special.
Arrival When you arrive, Daniel will be outside the church greeting everyone. Together you’ll wait for me to arrive with the dever (the groom’s brother), Joel. When entering the Church, Orthodox tradition is to cross yourself. Inside, men stand on the right and women on the left. Guests stand throughout the ceremony and there are only a few seats available, so please leave those for anyone who may need them.
Who’s Leading the Ceremony Our ceremony will be conducted by Very Rev. Protopresbyter - Stavrophor Ilija Dragosavljevic and Rev. Presbyter Nikola Kovacevic. The service will run for about an hour, during which Daniel and I will stand before the priest facing the altar as the ceremony unfolds around us. I’ve also been loosely promised that roughly 40% of the ceremony will be in English… so think of the rest as a beautiful cultural immersion experience.
The Betrothal During the ring ceremony, the priest will tie our right hands together with a small ribbon or cloth while placing the rings. This symbolises that from this moment onward, Daniel and I are bound together. The priest will then exchange the rings between us three times, representing the Holy Trinity.
The Crowning One of the most beautiful moment of the ceremony! Ceremonial Crowns are placed on our heads to represent the glory and honour of marriage, and the idea that we become the king and queen of our own little family. You will see our kum (godfather) Nik, holding the crowns above our heads during this part.
The Common Cup Daniel and I will share wine from the same cup. It symbolises that from today forward we share everything together - both joyful moments and the challenging ones too.
The Ceremonial Walk We’ll then be led around the altar three times while holding the Gospel. The circle represents eternity and unity. This is called The Dance of Isaiah and it symbolises our first steps of our new life together.
Blessings & First Kiss After the final blessings are given, we’ll share our first kiss as a married couple. Because the ceremony is sacred, we kindly as that guests don’t clap or cheer inside the church. Save that energy for outside!
Congratulations Once we step outside, the celebration begins! This is when you can congratulate us, hug us, and join the festivities. There will be lively music, delicious food, plenty of drinks and of course kolo (traditional circle dancing). At weddings, kolo symbolises the two families and communities coming together around the newly married couple. No experience required - just grab a hand and jump in the circle!
