EXPLORE
Our perfect day along the Illawarra coast begins just south of Sydney at Bald Hill Lookout, where the cliffs fall away to an endless stretch of ocean and hang gliders drift slowly through the sky. It’s one of those places that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and take in the beauty of the coast.
Start by taking the Helensburgh exit from the M1 and follow Lawrence Hargrave Drive to Bald Hill Lookout. From there, this road winds down to the sea and across the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge, a stretch of road that feels it’s floating between the mountains and the ocean.
If you like coffee as much as Daniel, there are plenty of great spots to stop during your seaside drive. Our favourites include Earth Walker & Co in Coledale and Park Road Garage in Bulli, or if you are feeling more hungry, one of our more memorable and spontaneous dates included a romantic dinner at Mexican restaurant, Boveda in Thirroul, or if seafood is more your thing, you could try the famous Rosie’s Fish & Chips back in Coledale.
If you’re spending time in Wollongong itself, we love a peaceful stroll through the Wollongong Botanic Garden, a beautiful green escape filled with winding paths, amazing trees, pretty gardens (it will be Spring!) and little pockets of quiet. Or back on the coast, take a walk on the Blue Mile Pathway across Wollongong’s beaches, harbour and the two lighthouses (or see WIN Stadium on the beach, home to the mighty St George Illawarra Dragons!)
Want to swim? Our personal favourite is Bulli Beach, where the golden sand stretches along the coastline and the ocean pool sits right beside the waves. There’s even a small kiddy pool, a park and Bulli Beach Cafe, making it a lovely spot for families to relax and cool off in the sea air anytime of day.
Continuing south to the other side of Wollongong, the drive becomes something truly special. The green escarpment rises steeply on one side while the Pacific sparkles on the other — that magical Illawarra moment where the hills meet the sea. The roads wind through the coastal towns of Kiama, Gerringong, and Berry, each one full of charm and perfect for a slow wander, a bakery stop, or a long lunch. Perhaps you want to visit the Kiama blowhole or Berry donut van again? Or try one of the local wineries.
This stunning and tranquil part of NSW is full of beautiful gems and is amongst our most favourite places all year round. Whatever you decide to do during your time here, we are sure you will enjoy it too.
