Once Upon a Childhood

The Wonder Years in Austral

Childhood was a time of curiosity, small adventures, and endless imagination. Growing up on a farm in Austral with three brothers, our days were spent discovering the world around us. Some of my favourite pastimes included baking mud pies, fighting invisible enemies with a stick as Xena Warrior Princess, and climbing our mulberry tree. Mum and Dad, young and full of love, encouraged authenticity and individuality at every opportunity. They always pushed us to think outside the box in our search for truth. My grandparents connected us to a past rich with wisdom and tradition. My babas taught me how to “snagi se” — to draw on inner strength and resilience. Surrounded by family, laughter, and moments of wonder, these early years shaped the foundation of who I am today.

Bridges Between Worlds

A Hobbit of the Shire

The becoming years were messy, exciting, and full of turning points. It was a time of trying new things — and, of course, making mistakes.

Moving from the Western Suburbs to the Sutherland Shire brought culture shock at its finest. Suddenly I felt the need to fake tan and bleach my hair blonde. High school later became a time when I embraced my inner nerd. I joined choirs, musical groups, drama clubs, writing clubs and the debating team, learned to play the piano, and read far too much horror fiction. Around this time my cousin Izabela was born, and spending time with her brought so many joyful, childlike moments into my life.

Later, I completed my first degree in Linguistics at Macquarie University. I will never forget the day my dad walked me in, or the proud look on his face when he watched me graduate. During this time, I met some of my closest friends and enjoyed Sydney’s night life. I swapped Stephen King for pretentious Penguin Classics, studied Hebrew, worked in art galleries and museums, and spent most of my money travelling, which truly opened my eyes to the world.

From visiting the motherland with my mum — where we had the most wonderful time and I felt I met her again as an adult — to exploring countries like Israel, Russia, Italy, and Norway, I began to see the magic and mystery that exists just beyond the veil of everyday life.

Yet these years were not without pain. Losing my father left a deep wound that nearly broke me, and the isolation of the Covid years, along with the breakdown of relationships, challenged everything I thought I knew about life. During this time, I leaned heavily on the grace and strength of God.

Through the highs and lows, the adventures and the heartaches, I slowly began to discover a sense of self that would carry me into the next chapter of my life.

Today’s Story

Life Today

Life today is a time of growth and gratitude. I found the love of my life just when I was meant to, and this year I am overjoyed to be marrying Daniel, with hopes of starting a little family together.

I work as a primary school teacher, endlessly inspired and entertained by the curiosity of young minds, learning alongside them every day. I live in a wonderful pocket of Sydney, just two minutes from my mum, surrounded by the people and places that make life feel full. Little nieces and a nephew have brought extra sunshine to the world.

Each morning, as I raise a glass of freshly squeezed celery juice, I find myself wondering what lessons the day might bring. I remind myself to “snagi” — to draw on inner strength — for both myself and the people I love, while keeping a light heart.

Each chapter of my life has helped shape my path, slowly revealing the person I am growing into.

I feel deep gratitude for the many extraordinary people, both here and in spirit, who have loved, guided, and supported me along the way. Thank you for walking beside me through so many chapters of my life. It means everything to celebrate this new beginning with you all.
